Only Two Shows into the New Year and its back to normal at Reputation Radio with some great music form Johnny and Pete, fun and sheer madness from the chat room looked after by Carry on Karen the queen of double entendre, a rant or two by Johnny some great guests and all of this marshalled by our very own Mizzy.

Sundays Show rose to a new audience level of nearly 10 million (Wow), The Saviours of Internet Radio are back with a bang, the show itself lived up to the billing of having a menu of fun and laughter which was highlighted by having Stewart Brennan (Minstral Show) on as the first guest of the year, Stewart fitted in very well with the rest of the crazy evening telling us all about his exploits on YouTube showcasing indie music, keep up the great work Stewart.

Paul Holden also came on the show with his new top of the range headset we were all left well impressed with his purchase but less so with his drummer jokes keep trying Paul. We were also joined by Baz who is a very busy lad these days holding down a job and hosting a Radio Show at strange hours, recording his music and finding time for his family life too, thanks guys for making the time to come on the show and entertain us all.

Universal and Sony Music are to release all new singles for sale on the day of their first radio play, this is the latest and probably final effort by the big labels to stop piracy after seeing the success of X-Factor winners selling a product very quickly they have jumped in to synchronise the release dates to cut short the time for piracy on initial sales of Singles, at present the music is played solely on Radio and TV for up to six weeks prior to the release date.

David Joseph, the chief executive of Universal Music, told The Guardian newspaper: “Wait is not a word in the vocabulary of the current generation. It’s out of date to think that you can build up demand for a song by playing it for several weeks on radio in advance.”  This system was brought in by the Labels when Record sales were at their peak to develop interest in the music before going on sale so a complete u turn there.

I for one do not believe that music sales will improve that much if Piracy was to stop completely it has always gone on in one form or other, when cassettes tapes first came out everyone used to record off the radio, CD’s were then copied by anyone with a computer . People who sell these copies are the people who should be rooted out.

The product has changed so much in the last couple of decades from vinyl to cassette then to CD and now to digital downloads but now the product is virtually invisible, when you bought a vinyl album you had a sleeve with background to the music and lyrics and you would have this on your lap whilst listening to the album, you had something you could take pride in and show friends whilst listening this has now vanished and its all digital easy to move from one place to another. On the plus side you can download the tracks you like and leave the ones you do not want, unlike the old days when one side of your album or single might never get played

This piracy thing will run on and on I think many people are like me and will always buy music because it feels right you buy the albums of your choice and within your spending limits, some people will not pay for their music the same way some people do not buy a TV license or road tax for their car they will always exist. But the majority of young people buy their music legally through web sites and are happy doing this so the Big Labels should think on that if they hadn’t been greedy in the first place the music sales would not be dropping off at the present rate, it’s time for the Artists to dictate exactly what they want and not before time.

The start of 2011 is also the beginning of the next chapter of The Reputation Radio Show, anyone who has been listening to the Shows or been on the website during 2010 will know that Reputation is constantly changing and re-inventing itself, to me this is what keeps the Reputation brand so fresh and also keeps all the crew on its toes, no time to reflect on any success the next show is always the most important one.

So let’s look at the Changes, the Reputation Radio Shows will now be transmitted on a Friday and a Sunday, the Crazy Friday Show (Historically Fridays have always been crazy on Reputation) will feature in Johnnies words

So there it is in a nutshell the new Friday Show on Reputation Radio which will be a whacky and crazy start to the weekend in true Reputation fashion with fun and fantastic music, now after a fun filled weekend you need to wind down ready for the new working week, The Sunday Gravy Show is the best way to do this with some more brilliant music some live guests and more fun and games with the Reputation Crew, again in Johnnies words:

Well it’s getting very near to Christmas nearly time for the mad stampede that occurs each year to become the Christmas No 1, some say it’s already known who will be number 1 (whatever artist that wins a certain TV Programme) there are numerous facebook links to support an unknown song or obscure song to get it to number one, this may have worked once but can’t see it working again as there are too many alternatives this year, everyone has caught on.

You can remember most of the Christmas Number ones from years ago but these days they are mostly forgettable very rarely do they have anything to do with Christmas , most of the Christmas music is from the 50’s 60’s and 70’s anyway not many offerings these days and when there are some they are usually remakes of the old hits.

Love it or hate it the season is upon us so we should all make the most of it, now I used to buy quite a few Cd’s for family and friends in years gone by but in this digital age everyone wants vouchers for iTunes etc so they can download exactly what they want, this is much better than getting Granny the latest album by the Chemical Brothers.

Youngsters today are swayed by the media to buy the music in the Top 40 download them to their IPod’s  to beat their friends to the latest hits and stay one step ahead of everyone else, most music  now being akin to a fashion statement rather than listening to a cool tune, it’s for bragging rights over their peers

Now as we all know the real music can be found on the Internet, there are numerous sites now promoting Unsigned Artists if you go on to any of these sites and listen to the sheer quality of music you can understand the Artists plight, I spend a lot of my spare time popping in and out of various sites listening to this music, the standard is amazing it needs to get out there to more people.

So what can we do about this?  Keep promoting the music, play it on internet radio stations but most of all when you get a voucher to buy some music this Christmas remember the names of these Artists and buy some of their music, you might just make the difference.

Now a great place to listen to such music is Reputation, more and more Artists are joining up to the community and getting their music played on the Reputation Radio Show and getting noticed by millions. Reputation is nearly a year old and what a year it has been; it’s a huge roller coaster ride with loads of fun and some tears but again what a year.

From the early day’s John had a vision of providing Promotion to Artists in any way he could at first through his Nervecast Podcasts and then through his next creation the Reputation Website creating his own community for the artists and for music fans alike then came the Reputation Radio Shows now listened to by a regular 7 million plus listeners three times a week.

There are now over a thousand members on the Reputation Website and the site has had over 5 million hits during its first year, it has regular visits from various high ranking people in the music industry so we could say it’s making its mark. This does not mean that John is content with the progress of Reputation far from it .John and the Reputation Team are constantly looking for new ways to promote and to improve Reputation so you can be sure that 2011 will have many more surprises and new ideas.

Do you remember the days when you looked forward to the Top 40 show on a Sunday Night listening in with your cassette player waiting to cut out the Dj and stop the recording before the DJ started talking again (sorry Johnny) it seems an age ago when you had no idea who would be number 1 each week and the records had to be released before they could enter the chart, and they were not played for weeks before they came out either.

It seems a long time ago, these days no one seems bothered with listening to the charts or with who is number 1. I think it stems from the Commercial Radio Stations playing the same old tunes 24-7 with the same old artists being featured on their playlists each week, very rarely do you hear many New Artists on these Radio Stations which leaves little room for the Unsigned Artist.

Even the Genre of music is not very broad as they like to keep the tempo aligned to their listeners taste; it’s all very much same old same old. Now I know that the whole Industry has radically changed over the years but there is no outlet for the other Genres of Music.

Well!! These days more and more people are turning away from these Radio Stations and listening to Internet based Stations who play mainly Unsigned Artists and have chat and a bit of fun in between the Tunes, this gives great promotion to Unsigned Artists and music that does not fall into the mainstream Genres.

The Best exponent of this is the Reputation Radio Show, now I know I’m biased but seven and a half million people around the world can’t be wrong can they?  The show goes out three times a week on a Monday, Friday and a Sunday. The Monday Show concentrates on the new music that has come into the show from the Reputation Artist’s, Johnny and Pete play 10 new tunes each Monday and also play other songs during the show from the Reputation Artists, in the middle of the show there is a special guest spot where an Artists is Interviewed by the crew and asked questions that come through the Reputation Chat Room.

The music played on these shows covers many Genres and is great credit to the Reputation Artists as  the standard set is extremely high but the quality comes through every week, so Pete carry on the good work your weekly choices push our enjoyment to their limits.

There are many other Internet radio stations about and the majority of them are doing a great job promoting artists and getting more and more people listening to the music there is so much untapped music waiting for us out there if it was left to the main Radio Stations we would never hear it. So we owe it to the Artists to carry on listening to The Reputation Radio Show each week to give the artists our support, it could just make the Difference.

On Monday’s Show this week the special guest was Mike MacDonald-Taylor from The Damzells (One of Reputations favourite Bands) what an Interview it was giving us all an Insight into the band that also features Sam Potts, Sam normally does the vocals for the band but their latest track played on the Show called `No Good for Me’ features Mike on Vocals for the first time, what a track it was too It blew us all away, more of this Mike we love Sam’s voice on the Damzells music but please do some more vocals yourself it’s looking good for the Band’s future.

It’s been a great week yet again at Reputation starting with the Halloween party on Sunday Night which fulfilled its promise to be one hell of a night some great music during the Night plenty of fun and some scary stories from some of the Reputation regulars from Artists and the Chat Room.

A big shout out to everyone who contributed to the show it was great listening to the stories and even better in the knowledge that they were all Reputation members you all did a great job and it’s not the easiest thing to talk on the Skype link to all those listeners without becoming a little nervous, many of them for the first time. But they were guided by Johnny and Pete extremely well.

I must say a big thank you to Karen who organised the event extremely well, sorting the guests out, getting them ready to talk and escorting them through that slimy dungeon to talk to the hosts well done Karen.

Monday’s show was another belter with 10 new tracks selected by Pete which again were superb giving us a great mix of genres and some fantastic tracks too, it does get harder to vote each week, this will be the last Artist of the week comp until after Christmas, as Reputation Radio will be concentrating on other things until the holiday period. Our guest on Monday was the lovely Kerry Kelley who answered questions put to her by Johnny, Pete and the Chat Room regulars, Kerry has been a favourite at Reputation for some time now and it was great to hear her interview. The Show also played three tracks by Kerry the first `I know you’ was the track that brought her to the attention of Reputation, it still sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it.

The second was a new track called `Hear Me’ a very recent demo by her new band `Tall Enough’ the band have only been together for a few weeks but if this track is anything to go by there are plenty more great tracks to come from them, the final track played was the up-tempo `What it is’ which is my personal favourite track of Kerry’s. Once again a big thank you to Kerry for being a guest on the Reputation Radio Show and you gave us all a great insight into your musical world.

More Good News from Reputation this week was the fact that I am Your Hero have won `The Favourite Emerging Band Award ‘at the Brighton Music Awards well done to Jacko and the lads for winning the award, and a big thank you to all the Reputation members who voted for the band, this just goes to show, you can make a difference.

Who fancies even more promotion?

When Reputationlabel was launched in January 2010 the aim was to promote the fantastic wealth of Unsigned Artists around the globe. The spade work had begun earlier with The Nervecast podcast’s which were tremendously supported by Artists and fans alike then along came Reputation.

Johnny Summers launched the Reputationlabel site to further promote Artists and Bands in the aim of getting them heard far and wide and to make that little bit of difference, this has been a huge success and has raised eyebrows of many people involved in the Music Industry.

They are noticing more and more just what Reputation is achieving in its short existence whether it is the Website the Reputation Radio Shows or now Soundirect.

This is a further step in the Reputation ideal of fully promoting Unsigned Artists, as John has stated n his write up on the website regarding this exciting new venture, the average attention span of the passing web traffic is fifteen minutes, so the aim is to get as much information across during that time and the Artists information is accessed quickly and easily.

Soundirect will have its listing on the Reputationlabel main page so only one click is required to access the artist information, as usual the Reputation Team will be promoting the Soundirect pages through all the social networking sites, in our own inimitable style and keeping everyone up to date with the latest Artists to join Soundirect we will also promote the pages through our Blogs and Newsletters.

More and more influential people in the Music / Radio business are popping in to Reputationlabel on a regular basis so these pages  will give them instant access to the Artists who are serious about getting noticed with all their sites links music and video’s in one place.

The Reputation Radio Show will also feature the Artists found on Soundirect within its playlists and features and also by passing on the information and sharing with other Radio Stations on all broadcasting levels.

Of course this is an additional tool for Artists to self promote  and get their music heard also remember that Reputation encourages Artists to join as many promotional sites as they like (you can’t get enough promotion) so you can share the links with other sites too.

Why Reputation?

Reputation is fast becoming the number one site for promoting unsigned artists, it’s free to join and once a member you have a plethora of promotional tools to help you the unsigned artist to promote yourself through the Reputationlabel website, Chat Room and the amazing Radio Show.

Once you have joined you can easily set up your profile ,type in your details and we blinks, you can also upload your music and photos to your profile to keep your fans up to date with what you are up to including gigs new releases and merchandise. You can now invite your fans through MySpace Facebook and Twitter (there is a direct link from your profile to Twitter so don’t waste it) to join you on Reputation and help promote and support you.

The next thing you can do is set up your own Group on the site and through this you can message all the Group members directly about all your activity and music, the more fans you can get into the site the more promotion you can achieve. Get yourself into the Chat Room introduce yourself to the other members and enjoy the banter this the best place to be when the shows are on you can speak to your friends fans and other members and interact with the show.

Now if you have a couple of decent MP3’s you can upload your songs from the main page and they go directly to Pete Ringmaster who then listens to all the tracks and then chooses the 10 tracks to go on our “Track of the Week” competition the winner each week is played on the Reputation website front page for the next week and is also played on the Reputation Radio Shows.

Now if your tracks are played on the shows it is at present reaching 6.5 million listeners 3 times a week plus being included on the Podcast Show which is now up and running and proving very popular, how’s that for promotion ?. I have been reading the usual musical articles this week but one jumped out at me it was regarding a speech made by Rob Dickins (who ran Warner Music in the UK for 15 years between 1983 and 1998) Speaking at the, In The City music conference in Manchester this week he suggested music albums should be slashed to a £1 he suggested “radically lowering prices would help beat piracy and lead to an exponential sales rise, prices had already been pushed down  by price wars and declining demand, and were likely to fall further”.

But as you can imagine his views have been met with scepticism by many people in the music business, Mr Dickins made these comments during a debate with Bertis Downs who is manager of REM

Now let’s examine this from the point of view of an unsigned artist is it a good thing to spend many hours of your time to produce an album and then sell the finished article for £1?

The Record Labels will fight further reduction in album prices as they always have done but is it inevitable that albums will come down this low?, In the current financial climate the punters do have the upper hand when they decide to buy an album they can pick and choose what and when they buy it, in the past popular artists would sell their albums and then sell a few compilations of their “Greatest Hits” “Early Years” etc, and their fans would buy them no matter what.

The Digital Age has stopped this the Fans decide what they want and get it from ITunes or Amazon via a download to their personal players instantly, this is driving prices lower as they do not want tracks they already have on their IPod’s. So the price will not hurt the established bands that much as the emphasis on earnings these days is from touring and selling merchandise not so much from sales. But if the price is low it could encourage more spare of the moment sales.

But for the unsigned artists as ever it’s not as easy most of the albums at the moment are anything from  £3 to £7 if not given away free if the album prices are driven down to £1 it will greatly reduce their income and could well be the difference between carrying on and calling it a day. Each album is a piece of art produced by the artist and should not have a price tag like a packet of crisps or jar of coffee. But it’s a tough world out there with a great deal of competition. Prices will eventually find their level no matter what but let’s hope the unsigned artists can get a fair deal.

While Johnny has been away poor Pete Ringmaster has been stuck in his Sideshow dodging the bearded lady and trying to keep his blue body in one piece, he has however been busy listening to new tracks and getting them together for the artist of the week competitions he has also been looking after the site in Johnnie’s absence not an easy task but he has done very well.

Mizzy, Karen and I have had some time to catch up with our real lives during the break but we can’t wait until the shows start up again, there has been a void in our lives for the last week and it will be great to get back to normal and I’m sure the many listeners feel the same.

Congratulations to Our Innocence Lost (Picture Below) for winning Artist of the Week with their track Touched by Grace, I think we will hear a lot more from this great band from Manchester. As usual this track will be played on the welcome page of the website until the next winner is announced.
